The Canadian Association of New York is very pleased to announce that the 2011 Hockey Achievement Award Dinner, the annual fundraising dinner for the Canadian Community in New York, will be held at the Waldorf=Astoria in the Starlight Roof on Monday, June 20, 2011

We are delighted to be honoring Brendan Shanahan with the 2011 Hockey Achievement Award.

Brendan Frederick "Shanny" Shanahan enjoyed a storied 21 year NHL career, representing the Devils, Blues, Whalers, Red Wings and Rangers before his retirement in 2009. A power forward known for his physical play and goal scoring ability, Shanahan entered the NHL history books No. 11 in all-time goals (656), No. 23 in all-time points (1,354) and as the only player in NHL history to record over 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes. A three time winner of the Stanley Cup, Shanahan was also awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2003 for the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community.

On the international stage Shanahan represented Canada on numerous occasions including the 1987 World Junior Championships, the 1991 Canada Cup, the 1994 and 2006 World Championships, the 1996 World Cup and the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games. In 2010, he was one of only 22 players honoured in the IIHF’s Triple Gold Club – winners of the Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal and a world championship.

A native of Mimico, Ontario, Shanahan played his junior hockey with the London Knights of the OHL, with whom his number 19 has been retired. He was drafted by the Devils second overall in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.

Shanahan is widely viewed as an innovator and articulate spokesman for the game. The so-called “Shanahan Summit” in 2004 was credited as the catalyst for the faster, more entertaining brand of hockey the NHL has enjoyed in recent years. Today Shanahan continues his contributions to the game as the NHL's vice president of hockey and business operations.
