Tourney this weekend

It looks like we going to have, yet again, spectacular weather for the CANY Hockey tourney this weekend!

Even if you’re not playing, there are a lot of ways to get involved and contribute to this great charity event.

1.  Volunteer for tourney weekend.  We need people to do all sorts of things on Saturday and Sunday.  100% of our tourney staff are volunteers.

2.  Come and watch some of the action in Central Park!  It’s a great way to spend part of the day.  Saturday at 1pm we will hold a skills competition.

3.  Make a direct donation to the tournament or donate an item for our raffle.  This will help us to reach our charitable goals!

4.  Come to the Saturday night social event at Canada Cabin @Windfall.

Leading up to, and throughout, tourney weekend please visit our friends at Westside Skate & Stick if you require any equipment or skate sharpening.  They are located at 174 Fifth Ave, Suite 504 (btw 22nd & 23rd St.) and are open Tues-Fri 10-7pm,  Sat 11-6pm, and Sun noon-5pm.

Please contact dean.keyworth@canadianassociationny.org if you’re interested in volunteering for the tourney this year.

Central Park Canadian Invitational

Welcome!

Thanks to all involved for making this year’s tourney a huge success!  We had great (albeit windy) weather and enjoyed some fun, friendly, and competitive hockey in one of the most beautiful city parks in the world.  The quality of the hockey and the level of sportsmanship was tremendous this year.

A special thanks goes out to all those who generously volunteered countless hours as planners, event staff, web developers, photographers, videographers, referees and timekeepers.  Our volunteers are the heart and soul of this great charity event – thank you so much!

Congratulations to Le National who captured the 2011 Stikeman Cup. Le National improved upon a seventh-place ranking in 2010 with some efficient and disciplined hockey throughout the tourney, going 3-0 in the round robin and taking only 2 penalties.  In the final, they beat a hard-working Queen’s squad with a thrilling 7-5 come-from-behind victory to cap off a great tourney.  Congratulations also go out to Alexandre Guay, the winner of the 2011 Porter MVP.  Alexandre was an offensive powerhouse and made some key plays in important moments – he receives two round-trip tickets anywhere Porter Airlines flies!

There were plenty of other spirited matches on Sunday - which was impressive considering the beer consumption at the social event on Saturday Night.  A particularly competitive game saw the 2010 champs Stikeman Elliott winning a see-saw battle against the Ice Hawks, scoring the go-ahead goal with 3:48 remaining to claim 3rd place in this year’s tourney.

The final standings in 2011 are as follows:

1. Le National

2. Queen’s

3. Stikeman Elliott

4. Ice Hawks

5. Hudson Hogs

6. CANY

7. Skadden

8. The Reds

9. Vapor Jets

10. Steam

11. Hudson Valley Storm

Riverdogs, Oglivy Renault and Les Boys did not play on Sunday.

In other tourney news, Joey Serlin of the Vapor Jets wins the 2011 Porter Most Sportsmanlike Player award.  The Vapor Jets traveled down from Toronto to participate, played with a short bench, and showed up bright and early on Sunday morning to play.  Joey receives two round trip tickets to the Porter destination of his choice.

We’d also like to extend a special thanks to our tourney sponsors, particularly Stikeman Elliott for being the 2011 Lead Sponsor.  Also, thanks to Oglivy Renault for sending a great crew from Canada and to Skadden for their ongoing support.  Thanks to Tim Hortons for the coffee and baked goods that made the early morning experience at the rink complete!  Also, many thanks to Porter Airlines for their generous sponsorship of our tourney and our event raffle.

Now we look forward to next year!  Please follow us on facebook and check back to this site for updates.  We will begin marketing sponsored teams early this year, so please reach out if you are interested in supporting the tourney in 2012.
