March 16
Hockey Night in New York

The signs are all around us: the snow is melting, the days are getting longer and the Rangers are booking tee times in Florida. Yes, the NHL playoffs are just around the corner.

Across Canada, people are making the necessary preparations. Thousands of Canadians—most of them men—are beginning to grow their playoff beards. Spouses are saying their farewells. Beer is being stockpiled. Recliners are being refurbished. Remotes are being reprogrammed to lock out all channels except for the CBC. It is a time of great anticipation.

So, c’mon New Yorkers, shake off that A-Rod fever and get your head in the game. Join the Canadian Club of NY on the evening of March 16 at Ship of Fools on the Upper East for a night of Canadian hockey. All six Canadian teams are in action, battling for playoff spots. So it doesn’t matter if you’re Leaf Lifer (God bless your hopeful little hearts), a Hab Hopeful (wake up, the 70’s were three decades ago), a Sensitive Sens Supporter (what’s that choking sound?), a Flames Fanatic (I’ll explain the playoffs to you later), an Oiler Optimist (hate to tell you, but I don’t think Wayne’s coming back), or just an old-fashioned Canucklehead (don’t ever change), there will be a game for you.

Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Ship of Fools, 1590 2nd Ave (b/w 81st and 82nd)

There will be drink specials, rampant gambling, celebrity sightings, bench-clearing brawls and sparkling conversation. And that’s a promise!

March 10
Bellisimo Clarinet! Bellisimo Jazz! Bravo!

From Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to the Great White Way, David Hopkins and his jazz trio blow the socks off Broadway. His beginnings were rooted in classical as he played with The Vancouver Symphony, The Metropolitan Opera, The NYC Opera, The American Symphony and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. His entre into jazz brought him even greater success as he played back up for the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Lena Horne. Join us for a night of old-school jazz in a neighborhood bar where the white-shirted, stogie-smoking bartenders never forget a name, nor your favourite drink. In-between sets, chat with David Hopkins (clarinet), Bob Cranshaw (bass), and John Colianni (piano) about their musical experiences on Broadway, with movie soundtracks, in t.v. shows and in a stint with Mel Torme.

Time: 6:00pm – Whenever
Location: Smith's Bar, 701 8th Ave (corner of 44th Street)
