Please join CANY as we celebrate the 93rd Grey Cup at the Canadian-owned Park Avenue Country Club. While some think of the Grey Cup as the final game in the Canadian Football League playoffs, it is really more than that — it’s the world championship of three-down football. Who will be crowned this year’s world champion? This will be the 10th time the Edmonton Eskimos play the Montreal Alouettes for the world championship of three-down football in the annual East-West Canadian classic! Will the Eskimos use their superior igloo-building and dog-sledding skills to their advantage or will the Alouettes soothe the Eskimos to sleep with a stirring rendition of a French lullaby? Although the on-field competition is always compelling, there are also some other exciting questions to be answered on Grey Cup Sunday. For instance, will Anne Murray have a “wardrobe malfunction” at halftime?

About the film About Canadian Front 2005 Time:6:00pm - 7:45pm reception at K Lounge (cash bar) March 16 Did you know that Canada does more trade in one year with The Home Depot than it does with all of France? Such is the magnitude of this company's importance to the overall Canada-U.S. trading relationship. This titan of do-it-yourself home improvement, with over 1,800 warehouse-style stores world-wide attracting 22 million customers each week, purchases some $2 billion worth of lumber from Canada every year - over a third of total Canadian softwood exports. The company is as much a fixture of the Canadian urban landscape as it is in the U.S. with over 117 outlets in nine of Canada's ten provinces and some 24,000 Canadians on The Home Depot payroll. While very much part of the larger Home Depot family, the company's Canadian stores have carved out a unique "Canadian" identity north of the 49th parallel. The recent decision to actively recruit employees in the 50+age bracket is but one example of how The Home Depot Canada is pioneering new business practices to better suit the modern North American marketplace. Annette Verschuren, President of The Home Depot Canada since 1996, is spearheading the company's incredible growth in Canada which will soon see 19 more stores opened across the country within the next 12 months. Born, raised and educated in Nova Scotia, Verschuren also heads Home Depot's EXPO Design Center®, a high-end interior design division which has had a great impact on the design of a growing number of Home Depot outlets across North America, including in both newly opened Manhattan stores. Please join the Canadian Consulate General in New York and the Canadian Association of New York in welcoming Ms. Verschuren to NYC to discuss Home Depot's place within the overall cross-border trading relationship and the future direction of the company's Canadian operations. Time:7:30 a.m. registration/buffet breakfast; 8:00 a.m. official proceedings begin March 10 The Canadian Association of New York, the Canadian Consulate and the Foreign Policy Association are privileged to have as guest luncheon speaker the Honourable Gordon Campbell, Premier, Province of British Columbia. Mr. Campbell's government was elected in May 2001, with the largest majority in the province’s history. After inheriting a difficult provincial economy, Mr. Campbell and his government vowed to fix the economy and bring in a new era of hope and prosperity. In three years, the government has brought forward major reforms to help meet those objectives. And BC’s economy is now projected to be one of Canada’s strongest in 2005. Premier Gordon Campbell will outline his Government’s actions to open Canada's “Gateway to Opportunity on the Pacific”. British Columbia is now one of Canada's hottest job creating economies and offers access to the rapidly expanding economies of the Asia Pacific regions. Premier Campbell’s comments will also highlight Canada’s 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, hosted by British Columbia. Time: 7:00 pm February 8 Canada's Oil Sands: energy security in America's backyard Global geopolitical pressures together with escalating energy demand from countries like China have prompted officials in Washington to pay increasing attention to West Africa and Russia as potential substitutes for volatile Gulf oil. But an even more stable supply lies closer to home. At around 2.5 million barrels daily, Canada's current total oil output already puts it ahead of most OPEC nations in terms of production. And with some 180 billion barrels in established reserves, Canada's oil wealth currently ranks second only to that of Saudi Arabia. Canada's main source for additional production are the Alberta oil sands. Currently, the oil sands produce more than one million barrels of oil per day (mbpd) with costs of production in the US$10-12 per barrel range. Output is expected to reach about 1.6 mbpd by 2013 and possibly four mbpd as early as 2030. Alberta's oil sands contain an estimated 1.7 trillion barrels of heavy crude oil. Of this, about 300 billion barrels are ultimately expected to be recovered. Charles Ruigrok, CEO of Syncrude Canada Ltd., is at the forefront of Canadian oil sands development. His company is the world's largest producer of crude oil from oil sands and the largest single source producer in Canada. Syncrude single-handedly produced the equivalent of almost 14 percent of Canada's petroleum requirements in 2004. Mr. Ruigrok came to Syncrude from Imperial Oil Resources, where he held the position of Vice President, Oil Sands Development and Research. In that role, he was responsible for the development of Imperial's extensive oil sands asset portfolio, including Imperial's 25% interest in Syncrude. Please join the Canadian Consulate General in New York and the Canadian Association of New York in welcoming Mr. Ruigrok to New York to discuss key issues surrounding the energy sector in North America and how oil sands development will become increasingly important to the evolving energy security debate.
